PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) that do not require intervention (automatically operating PFDs) are suited to activities where persons are likely to enter the water unexpectedly; whereas PFDs requiring intervention (e.g. manually inflated PFDs) are only suited for use if the user believes there will be sufficient time to produce full buoyancy, or help is close to hand. 6) Does the ARA recommend the use of Lifejckets?
Although the sport of rowing is one demanding a high level of movement and physical demand and where avoiding the wearing of anything that restricts this activity is important to the athlete, the lifejacket or buoyancy aid does have an important role to play.
Also Known as “personal flotation devices” (PFDs) they are an important consideration in reducing the risk to juniors and beginners where the level of skill and experience contributes to their chances of capsize, particularly in sculling and small boats.
Lifejackets are also an important consideration in providing sport to those, because of handicap cannot swim, or because of certain health problems e.g. Epilepsy, would be incapacitated.
Juniors
The ARA strongly advise that juniors wear PFDs until such time as the have successfully completed a swim test and capsize drill and have reached a competent level of skill in a single skull. Even then, in adverse weather conditions, considerations should be given to their use as part of the risk assessment.
Beginners
An adult beginner may feel more comfortable wearing a Lifejacket and gain confidence in their early stages when mastering the basic skills and should always be available and offered for their use.
7) Will the ProSport ARA Lifejacket compromise my Rowing/Sculling Technique?
Any additional garments will inhibit your freedom of movement. However, most rowers & Scullers of all levels report that it does not hinder their Rowing/Sculling technique.
8) How long has the ProSport ARA Lifejacket been used by rowers & Scullers?
The ProSport ARA Lifejacket was developed together with the ARA specifically for rowers/scullers over a 2 year trial period. The ProSport has been available since May 2005.
